Wooden Gates

Whether you’re installing a gate for privacy, security or aesthetics, it will only fulfil its aim if it’s installed correctly.

Getting the right gate for your needs is the first thing to achieve, but you also need a strategy in place for hanging it if you’re opting for DIY installation.

In this article, we’ll guide you step-by-step through how to hang a gate without professional help.

How to install a garden gate

The required installation steps will vary depending on the type of gate you choose and where you’re hanging it. The below instructions will refer to installing a garden gate down an alleyway or walkway between two walls or structures.

  • Purchase your gate: The first step is to pick a gate that fits the aesthetics and dimensions of your property. Our team at Harrow Fencing can help you select a gate that will work for your home, helping you choose from a range of timber types and grades to get that perfect look.
  • Create the right size gate frame: Next, you need to purchase or build the right size gate frame. If you’re building a gate frame, make sure you leave a couple of centimetres on either side of the gate to accommodate for expansion and retraction of the timber. Check that the gate posts and frame are all level using a spirit level.
  • Affix the hinges: Please confirm with your gate supplier which side is best to install the hinges on. Different sizes of gate will require different numbers of hinges, but usually two to three will suffice. Affixing the hinges may vary depending on which hinges you select, and screws and a drill will likely be needed for this step.
  • Put the gate in the frame: Before placing the gate in the frame, you may wish to pop a small wedge of wood on the floor, at the bottom of the gate, as a measure to ensure the door won’t get caught on anything when it opens. Also, make sure there is roughly the same gap size on either side of the door. Then you can drill the hinges to the frame, drilling a couple of screws into a couple of holes in each hinge first to check you have the alignment correct, before drilling screws into the rest of the hinge holes.
  • Install the latch: Security is paramount so don’t forget the latch. Different latches and bolts will have different parts to them so remember how to install your specific chosen latch or bolt type. A key tip is to install it low enough that nobody will be able to lean over the top of the gate to undo it.

Remember, these instructions may vary depending on your individual circumstances and the products chosen. If in doubt, you can get your gate installed by a professional
